Online Campaign for Syrian Activist Succeeds
| June 6, 2012 |
Promptly following the arrest of protester Yasmin Bakaji, Syrian activists launched an online campaign to free the Syrian student within 24 hours. Bakaji, a 19 year-old engineering student at the University of Aleppo, was arrested on May 29, 2012, for participating in a demonstration.
Bakaji’s colleagues started a Facebook page calling for her immediate release. The page quickly gained over 1,147 supporters. The campaign has even managed to transcend the internet and attract protestors on the ground. In a video published by online activists, demonstrators shown held banners in the Dair Al Zor in support of Bakaji.
Syrian authorities, likely embarrassed by the mass support for Bakaji, released her.
