During an interview with Kalamkom, a leading Moroccan online editorial, Kacem El Ghazzali discussed the new movement that he founded, Mayasaminch. The movement calls on Moroccans who do not observe Ramadan to eat publicly, as it is forbidden in Morocco to eat, drink, or smoke in public while observing Muslims are fasting.
El Ghazzali told Kalamkom that the movement is not meant to just challenge the law that prohibits public eating during Ramadan, but is an initiative meant to defend the broader concept of individual freedom. He also went on to say that he believes the timing of the movement, in the midst of the religious holidays and feasts, is optimal because Muslims are unaccustomed to hearing the opinions of others during Ramadan.
El Ghazzali is known as one of the few atheist activists in Morocco and is a proponent of religious and sexual freedom. He has been living as a refugee in Switzerland for over a year.
