Aria Aramnejad is a young Iranian pop singer from the Northern Iranian city of Babol. He is best known for his song “Ali Barkhiz” (Rise up, Ali), which he wrote and released shortly after the Ashura anti-government protests in December 2009.
Aramnejad was arrested on February 15, 2010, on charges of “endangering the national security of the country” for releasing his song on YouTube, which denounces the Islamic regime's crimes during the protests. He was kept in solitary confinement for fifty days, and sentenced to nine months in prison. In his court hearing, Aramnejad testified to being tortured in prison "being severely beaten, threatened with murder, and photographed naked. He was released on April 4.2012.
