Shahram Rafizadeh is a journalist, poet and author who was born on September 11, 1970, in the Gilan province of Iran. Rafizadeh began working first in publishing and editing, then as a journalist focused primarily on poetry, literature and culture. After the Chain Murders in 2000, Rafizadeh began engaging in political journalism and co-authored a book with Nima Tamadon about the assassinations in Iran. Rafizadeh wrote three additional volumes about the Chain Murders, only one of which was allowed to be published in Iran.
Rafizadeh was arrested by the Parallel Intelligence Apparatus in 2004 and charged with blogging and writing articles for website such as Gooya News and Emrooz, both of which are reformist sites. He was detained for 86 days, 73 of which were spent in solitary confinement. The last 13 days of his detainment he spent in Evin prison. He was finally released and left the Iran in 2005. Rafizadeh currently resides in Toronto, Canada.
